Dr. Donny Khela Earns the 2024 Deogracias “Deo” P. Esguerra, MD Service Award
Dr. Donny Khela, one of NMC’s Hospitalist team, was honored with the Deogracias “Deo” P. Esguerra, MD Service Award at NMC’s recent Medical Staff Appreciation event.
The award was created in 2011 to honor a provider with a “passion for excellence and dedication to the patients of our community.” Its namesake, Dr. Esguerra, was known as a caring, passionate and inspirational physician who loved both the science and art of medicine.
Dr. Katie Montagne, the 2023 recipient, presented the award to Dr. Khela, saying “To say Donny is thought of in high regard is an understatement. Nurses and providers alike have remarked on his consistent high-quality care, his humility, and his respect for patients, families and colleagues. Dr. Khela has been a blessing for our community not only in patient care, but also devoting countless hours on hospital committees.”
Peter Wright, Chief Executive Officer of NMC, said, “Dr. Khela embodies everything the Deo award stands for. He is kind and caring, thoughtful, always willing to help and teach, and very approachable. I think I can safely speak for everyone when I say, this is so well deserved. It was an honor to be present and witness Dr. Khela’s reaction and the standing ovation that followed.”
Dr. Khela joins a list of “Deo Award” honors that that includes Dr. Fred Holmes, Dr. Frank Zsoldos, Dr. Mike Corrigan, Dr. Chip Chiappinelli, Dr. Robert Zelazo, Dr. Stephen Payne, Dr. Toby Sadkin, Dr. John Minadeo, Dr. Robert Beattie, Dr. Lowery Sullivan, Dr. Laura Bellstrom, Dr. Louis Dandurand, and Dr. Katie Montagne.
This year’s Medical Staff Appreciation event was held in person at Maquam Barn and Winery in Milton. During the meeting, new providers were recognized, and physicians and advance practice providers who achieved milestones in length of service were also honored.
Two additional providers were recognized for their leadership during the presentation. Amy Fox, APRN, of NMC’s Hospitalist team was honored with the Clinical and Cultural Excellence Award and Dr. Anna Royer of Northwestern Associates in Surgery received the Leadership Award.
